体细长，圆筒形或近圆筒形，头锥形，口下位，横裂，下颌前部有发达的角质，角质部分呈菱形，前缘锐利，弧形或近横直，下唇发达，须两对，短小，背鳍末根不分支鳍条为软弱的刺，后缘下部有极细小的锯齿，腹鳍基外侧各有一明显的腋鳞，肛门－臀鳍基两侧各有一列大型臀鳞（15－18枚），尾鳍叉形，末端尖。
